This book contains essays on the early history of the Church that took place in New York and Pennsylvania.
"The essays are just that-- separate papers, from separate authors, on discrete topics in early Church history. No narrative binds them together; region, rather than a plot, is their one common denominator. They deal with everything from the larger religious context of upstate New York in the early nineteenth century to the construction and dedication of the Palmyra Temple, from the validity of Lucy Mack Smith's well-known history of Joseph Smith to the genesis and refinement of the Hill Cumorah Pageant. Where possible, we have included visual images in a further effort to bring these histories alive-- an effort realized most successfully in Craig J. Ostler's photo essay on the Susquehanna Valley. It is our hope that these essays, both individually and collectively, will be a significant and lasting contribution to our understanding of Church history in this area." [Abstract from the text]
