This article examines the evolution of the Relief Society literature curriculum, from its inauguration in 1914 until its end in 1970. The content and format of the lessons varied greatly over the years, especially due to the correlating influence of Church leaders who worried the literature lacked spiritual value. Notwithstanding this, the course provided an opportunity for women without a college education to learn about great literature and expand their worldview. By 1970, the Church and its membership had changed sufficiently that a literature course was no longer perceived as a useful inclusion in Church curriculum.
