“An attempt to articulate an LDS theology of sexuality must examine both the normative sexual practices that Latter-day Saints enforce as well as the theological explanations that they have offered to describe sex. Both the practices and the theology have changed over time, sometimes quite dramatically, and should be historically situated. LDS theology of sex is not impermeable from its cultural context but is in dialogue with larger historical forces that give it meaning. This chapter then briefly discusses three historical periods where Latter-day Saints have defined new (to them) teachings about sexuality: the era of polygamy in the nineteenth century, the strict sexual morality that developed in the 1950s–1970s, and Mormonism’s sexual revolution that has slowly taken place since the 1970s. Finally, this chapter reviews some of the contemporary issues in Mormon theologies of sex.” [Author]
