“This chapter identifies that gendered Mormonism is locally negotiated and contested in Ireland within both a traditional Mormon doctrinal framework, and a rapidly liberalizing and progressive Irish society. By analyzing how gender is experienced within Irish Mormonism’s local congregations, we can observe the negotiation of this particular juxtaposition. Irish Mormon congregations become sites where the commonalities and differences between these two gender frames collide. Members bring the progressive perspectives of the majority society which they are a part of and live within, into a space in which traditionally gendered understandings of power are sustained. Local Mormon congregations are spaces in which religious actors create and sustain meaning, develop and build community, and enact, adapt, or confront the doctrine of their church (Black, 2016). They are prime locations in which modern Irish Mormons’ understandings and enactment of their gendered identities can be observed and understood.” [Author]
