"Given the complexity of early Mormon history, it is difficult to sort out the relative importance of religious commitment, frontier adversity, plural marriage, and outside opposition in shaping values and behavior in early Utah. Still, if Cott is right about the power of marriage to define the ways the sexes 'act in the world,' then a closer look at similarities and differences between Latter-day Saints and their neighbors might tell us something about the stability or the mutability of the construct we call gender. This essay will explore four arenas where Latter-day Saints appear to have deviated from broader ideas about gender: in their approach to divisions of labor and responsibility within households, in their understanding of sexuality, in their acceptance of divorce, and in their eventual embrace of woman suffrage."
