"Of all the challenges that Sanie [Sarah Peterson] Lund faced as a missionary wife, it was the thought of her husband marrying a second time that provoked her most biting commentary and revealed her raw emotions. Focusing solely on this aspect of her experience may be a little unfair to her since her wit and warmth are somewhat obscured whne she muses on the topic of plural marriage. Neverhteless, her candor provides a window into the world of faithful Latter-day Saint women who faced a future in which polygamy seemed inevitable, and especially for nineteenth-century missionary wives. Men were introduced to hundreds of women on their missions, any one of whom could attract a husband's attention while wives were left at home to wonder and stew. While Sanie's story cannot be extrapolated to represent all her Latter-day Saint sisters who sent husbands into the mission field, it hints at commonalities that deserve further exploration."
