"In this essay, I examine contemporary Mormon women's accounts of their visions of the Divine Female as a crucial site for understanding the way these women develop a personal and empowered spirituality while negotiating a place for themselves within the highly patriarchal structure of the LDS Church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church). Each of these women claims that a visionary event was spiritually transforming, altering perceptions of self and other. As creators of mystical speech, they each employ what French cultural theorist, Michel de Certeau, calls the language of the apostolic 'I', a 'heterology' that simultaneously challenges the institution while upholding the religious tradition. The belief in a Heavenly Mother is considered an orthodox doctrine in current LDS theology. Likewise, LDS Church members are encouraged to receive personal inspiration and divine comfort through prayer in dealing with their everyday problems. However, for a women to claim a vision from the Mormon Mother God involved her in heterodox practice, especially when the content of that vision disrupts current Church teachings and expectations in some way. The fact that women's visions like those documented in this essay are not discussed in mainstream venues or in official LDS discourse magnifies the tension between the orthodox-heterodox nature of the visions, which paradoxically gives them the potential to alter LDS belief and practice in subtle ways, while reinforcing the basic tenets held by Mormons."
