"In early Spring of 1871, at the direction of what they regarded as 'spirit guides,' giving them directions through automatic writing, several members of a theatre troupe called Carter's Dramatic Combination traveled by horse and wagon from Los Angeles, California, over 700 miles of high plains and desert terrain. They emerged in Salt Lake City some two months later to be baptized by Brigham Young. Twelve days after their arrival, Young had installed four of them as featured stars of the Salt Lake Theatre. Here in the sesquicentennial year of these events, this article uses an under-analyzed affidavit by actor W. J. Cogswell (1836-1906) to explore the Carters' claim in detail, its basis in historical fact, and its place in subsequent legend." [Author]
