"As a doctoral student, I finally had the opportunity to circle back to the preliminary question -- the question that haunted me since I was sixteen: 'How did Utah women and their writing influence our state and nation?' This opportunity was bolstered and supported by access to unparalleled archival sources--wherein I relied on sources that allowed me to learn about these women and their influence from their own writings, their own accounts, and their own words. This project is an effort to stay true to these sources and to provide more attention to Mormon feminist women and their efforts to construct legitimacy for themselves in their faith. This project works to give voice to women who were not only pioneers in the original sense, like Emmeline B. Wells, but pioneers in other contexts and time periods, as well. These other feminist pioneers include Fawn Brodie, who fought her way into earning tenure, as one of the first female professors to do so at the University of California, Los Angeles. And Sonia Johnson, who is well known in the second-wave feminist movement and even sought nomination as one of the first candidates for president. And lastly, Kate Kelly, who arguably reignited the conversation around Mormon feminism and continues to work on behalf of American women in her pursuit of the Equal Rights Amendment." [Author]
