"Over many years, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have commented on the importance of America as the locale for the restoration of the gospel. Political, geographic, economic, and cultural factors coalesced to create fertile ground from which Joseph Smiths Mormonism could rise from the ashes of the burned-over district in New York. In addition to these factors, the print and literacy culture in antebellum America facilitated the faiths founding, which centered on and the Book of Mormon and the reading of it. The aim of this article is to correlate some events, from the colonial period to the antebellum era, that helped develop the print and literacy culture in America, thus adding to the conversation about the historical precursors of the unfolding of an American religion. The history presented here is not exhaustive and will be addressed chronologically by historical period. Because the of the preeminent role the Bible played in literacy and religious tradition, it will be addressed separately in its own section." [Author]
