"... blessings functioned in several different ways, including offering comfort and personal direction for individuals; legitimizing the spirituality and potential of new leaders; emphasizing the importance of heeding Joseph Smiths direction by showing the blessings God was willing to bestow on the obedient; and cementing bonds of friendship between Joseph Smith and those serving with him as leaders in the church. The years 1834 and 1835 constituted a season of blessings for the church in Kirtland, foreshadowing the endowment of power that would be bestowed on believers in the Kirtland House of the Lord in 1836."
