This essay provides a history of gardening in Mormon culture. It addresses teachings of multiple church leaders, the reasoning behind teaching gardening (to beautify and domesticate the earth, to help families become self-sufficient in their food supply, etc.), their effect on pioneer kitchens, as well as views on Mormon gardening from non-Mormons. Closer to our modern time, agricultural tendencies amongst Church members have declined, and there have been a few church leaders who've shown concern. The essay also addresses the environmental movement and its influences on Mormon culture.
