August 31, 1845 to July 5, 1846. Bullock explains the Church's record keeping practices, such as the writing of its history and the recording of temple proxy work. He writes about temple activities, including the temple endowment, sacrament meetings, and the second anointing, detailing the latter in particular detail. Bullock also comments on the process of spiritual adoption, noting his adoption into the family of Willard Richards. He describes a fire in the Nauvoo temple. He notes the first day on which the pioneers were said to have begun traveling West. He often alludes to the apostasies of the Strangites and John Page, noting also the Brethren's attempts to discredit them. In the midst of the post-martyrdom confusion, Bullock hears rumors that John Taylor would preach his last Mormon sermon and that Hosea Stout had shot Brigham Young. Bullock describes the militarization of the citizenry immediately prior to the Nauvoo exodus.
