"The attitude of the early Utah pioneers toward the Indians was uniquely colored by the Book of Mormon, which they accepted as a detailed religious history of the ancestors of the American Indian. According to Mormon scripture, as explained by James E. Talmage, the Indians were 'of Israelitish descent, belonging to the house of Joseph sho was sold in Egypt.' They were descendants of a colony which migrated to America around 600 B.C. under the leadership of Lehi and which after a period of strife split into two groups: the righteous ones called Nephites and the rebellious faction called Lamanites."
