This entry describes the conflict between the Mormon settlers and non-Mormon residents in Nauvoo, Illinois. As the Mormons migrated from Missouri and the population in Nauvoo expanded, skirmishes between these two sides led to he imprisonment and death of Joseph Smith. After the Battle of Nauvoo, the Mormons realized they needed to leave the city to survive and mounted an exodus to the West.
