In October 1975, LDS President Spencer W. Kimball invited Church Historian Leonard J. Arrington and his wife, Grace, to travel with him and over two dozen other Church leaders to Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea. [...] As area conferences developed in scope and scale throughout the 1970s, Arrington fulfilled this mandate. This article explores Arrington's position in the Church and the development of these area conferences. It will then discuss Arrington's experiences at the 1975 Asian area conferences. Although he was not asked for an official report, he kept a careful journal of his observations. But he also explained how he felt like "a member of the party, but not an official member of the party. An official but not a General Authority." [From the text]
