On November 11, 1831, a revelation to Joseph Smith declared, "My Servants who are abroad in the Earth should send forth the accounts of their Stewardship, to the Land of Zion." This provision helped assure that reports on the Church's establishment and growth worldwide flowed to a central place, where they could be used to write history.
The 2009 completion of a new Church History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City provided a superb repository for incoming records. It also marked a transition in Church record-keeping, a movement toward decentralization of collecting, preserving, and sharing the Church's global history. This article describes factors that led to this sea change. [From the article]
