In this article, the author highlights the idea that society knows much less of the prophet Joseph Smith than it appears. He points out that our access to the prophet's thoughts is more limited than many realize because of lack of detailed recording until late in his life. The author also points out that the meaning of Smith's life is also elusive because, paradoxically, it seems so familiar. This familiarity dulls imagination and creates a comfortable and distorted Joseph Smith. In this essay the author reminds us that familiar facts may be arranged and marshaled toward a less familiar interpretative lens. He presents a meditation on the possibility of a radical portrait of a radical man.
