In 1911-12, a barrage of anti-Mormon films were produced and distributed in Europe and the United States. They included such films as "A Victim of the Mormons" and "The Mountain Meadows Massacre." Church leaders tried to "stem the tide" of anti-Mormon films by appealing for help from Utah non-Mormon businessmen and state and local government officials. This article draws on new sources heretofore ignored by previous scholarly studies. The showing of these films adversely impacted missionary work in England and America. This controversy enlightened Church leaders about the power of films for reaching and influencing large audiences.
