"This paper will examine a small piece of the tapestry that formed the backdrop for the Restoration of the fullness of the gospel. Its intent is not to break new ground but rather to arrange the knowledge already available in a manner meaningful to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who want to understand their heritage more fully. To that end, I will briefly sketch the origins of Presbyterianism, its arrival in the colonies, its presence in what is now the state of New York before the establishment of the first presbytery, its expansion into the western part of the state, its growth near the time of the Restoration, and, finally, some of the challenges it faced as varying approaches to evangelism were tested."
