Numano focuses his article on a period of "hasty baptisms" in Japan during the late 1970s to early 1980s. He discusses the programs and pressures that led to the drastic rise in baptisms, and the associated short-cuts and procedures that led to problems such as unwilling or underage converts, poor retention rates, and the loss of faith in local members and missionaries. He discusses how alternative methods would be better suited to the Japanese culture, and would have prevented some of the lasting negativity with which missionary work is viewed in Japan.
