This is an interesting and detailed article about U.S. army personnel who were available to command the Utah expedition force. Several officers were in competition for the position. William P. MacKinnon describes these competing personalities and the political climate that President James Buchanan delt with to determine the final choice of commander. The article also discusses conflicts among less senior officers of the expedition, and over-all command confusion due partly to the great distances involved across the country.
