The author discusses the actions of Sam Houston in and out of congress to prevent the Utah War. Houston had had dealing with the Church when the Prophet Joseph Smith was looking for a place of refuge in Texas. At that time Church officials met with Sam Houston, but further action stopped when the Prophet was killed. Later, Lyman Wight founded a colony at Mormon Springs. Through his friendship with Mormon and Texas Ranger Seth Blair, Brigham Young persuaded Houston that a military campaign aganst the Utah Territory was futile. Houston prevented further bloodshed, but was unable to stop initial agression. Michael Scott Van Wagenen believes that Houston acted out of compassion for the Mormons, and not for political expediency.
