This article examines the reasons behind the construction of the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, which was completed in 1855. Truman O. Angell's architectural drawings, the Sanborn fire insurance maps, descriptions of the interior, and various photographs of the Endowment House are analyzed to determine the structure and function of this building. A baptistry for the dead and living also adjoined the building. The structure of the Endowment House had a great influence on the interiors of subsequent temples built in Utah.
