In 1853, 2,500 emigrants sailed on eight different ships from England to New Orleans, took steamboats to Keokuk, Iowa, and crossed the plains to Salt Lake City. Woods describes the Saints' preparation in Liverpool, the organization aboard the ships, the dangers of the transatlantic voyage which included sickness and storms, conversions at sea, yellow fever at New Orleans, passing through St. Louis, and the arrival at Keokuk.
