Johnson describes Sally Bradford Parker's background and expounds on an 1838 letter written to her brother-in-law John Kempton. This letter is unique because there are very few records from LDS women, especially before the organization of the Relief Society. Through her letter, Sally demonstrates her great faith and dedication to the Church. She also describes her close friendship with Lucy Mack Smith, and sermons given by Hyrum Smith. Sally wrote this letter after a great deal of bankruptcy and apostasy in the Church, and its purpose was to keep her sister's family informed on the status of the Saints. Johnson includes both the original transcription of the actual letter, as well as an edited version. The original transcription preserves the power and humanness of Sally's writing, and even though she remained in Ohio, Sally retained a strong confidence in God, the Book of Mormon, and Church leaders.
