Sparse documentation for Mormon women in the early years of the Church have caused some non-Mormon historians to conclude that 'women were generally dragged into Mormonism by their husbands and would not have united with the Mormons of their own volition.' Johnson disagrees with this evaluation. In her study of women during the early history of the Church, she finds that women weren't followers, but believed on their own. To illustrate the independence in conversion and strong beliefs of these women, she herein prints letters from four women: Lucy Mack Smith, Rebecca Williams, Phebe Peck, and Melissa Dodge.
