Howlett gives the history of the RLDS stewardship movement. As the church was redefining its mission in 1923, President Frederick M. Smith ordained six "stewards" to establish and live in ideal communities, preparing these communities for the Second Coming. Howlett uses the theories of Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu to explain the RLDS "Bio-power" efforts of establishing a physical kingdom on earth. Between 1923 and 1926, the RLDS Church experienced an internal struggle over authority and bureaucracy, which affected the Church's view of stewardship. Howlett describes the lengthy process for becoming a steward and summarizes his research on stewardship applications. The office of steward was permanently suspended in 1931 with the Great Depression.
