This article begins by appraising work by other authors on topics relating to the Reed Smoot hearings. Heath also surveys the context that followed the Woodruff Manifesto in 1890 and statehood in 1896, and summarizes the history of other "worthiness" hearings by the Senate similar to Smoot's. Some information needed to understand the public outcry and petitions that followed Smoot to Washington is provided. Heath also includes a summary of the process of the Smoot hearings, giving special attention to the correspondence between Church President Joseph F. Smith and Reed Smoot.
