"The intent of this book is to provide a broad perspective to rethink the traditional narratives and to highlight points of historical neglect. As a cursory review of the literature suggests, an important area of neglect has been the shared world of Mormons and Protestants, which in consequence has reductively left the former seeming parochial and the latter exclusionary. A broad reexamination of religious pluralism and religious liberty in North America allows us to question and reopen what many historians and students of Mormon history and American religion presume is a closed matter—namely, that broad religious liberty necessarily existed, and that religious pluralism was necessarily liberal and a natural evolutionary outcome of modernity. Gender and ethnic and racial presumptions and challenges play a part in these dynamics, together with broader cultural and environment influences, but in order not to distract from my larger inquiry into religious diversity, progressivism, and the shifting relationship between religion and the state, I have sought to limit my inquiry. In seeking not to be conclusive but instead thematic, my focus is to suggest that if this grand American experiment of religious liberty is to retain its relevance within America’s ever-expansive and diverse citizenry, then it is essential to reevaluate and better understand the moral and religious contexts in which it came to be, so as to reevaluate and reimagine what it now is and can yet be."
