Drawing principally upon his journals, the life of John D. T. McAllister is chronicled. The article focuses primarily on his St. George years. He helped work on the interior of the St. George Temple prior to its dedication. In 1877 he was called as president of the St. George Stake. In 1884 he was appointed president of the St. George Temple. He was a polygamist and spent much time in hiding during the 1880s to avoid arrest. His journals document the difficulties of polygamous life as several wives requested divorce. McAllister's work with Indians, temple work, and redirected empahsis on the Word of Wisdom are discussed. In 1893 he was appointed to be president of the Manti Temple.
