April 10,1854 to January 10, 1857. Several Apostles set apart the Southern Indian Mission leadership, ordaining Parley P. Pratt, Rufus Allen, David Lewis and Samuel Atwood as the mission presidency. Brown describes the members of the mission, and travels to Parowan, Utah. The missionaries farm and trade with the Indians of southern Utah, including the Moquis, Pahute, and Arappahoe. A medicine man tries to heal an Indian woman. Brown recalls his conversion, and the baptism (and renaming) of 17 Indians. Brigham Young comes and appoints John D. Lee as Stake President of Parowan and orders construction of Fort Harmony. Brown attends an Indian funeral and meets Chief Toker. Brown travels the Santa Clara River. Brown and others spend much of their time on the construction of Fort Harmony. Llewellyn Harris is whipped for striking an Indian. Brown takes W.W. Willis's daughter Mary as a plural wife.
