Joseph Smith's first known teaching about the doctrine of various work for the dead was in 1838 in an article in the Elder's Journal. The practice of baptism for the dead was initiated in the Mississippi River at Nauvoo in 1840. The ordinance was practiced outside of temples for a short time in Kirtland in 1841, at Winter Quarters in 1848, and occasionally in the Endowment House
