Hiram G. Parks of Richmond, Missouri, was a militia officer in the 1838 Mormon War. Although the writings of some Mormons identify him as a mobber, this 30 December 1839 letter evidences a warmth and friendship with James Sloan and his family, an Irish-born Mormon who had lived for a time in Daviess County. It was there that Parks became acquainted with Sloan and other Mormons
