published in London Earlier poems in Fugitive Pieces were signed "A. S.," the last of these dated "Dec. 9th, 1829." The next poem, dated "Aug. 9th, 1839," was signed A. C. The final poem "Written for a Friend" was signed "A. C., Vine Cottage, Sevenoaks, July, 1844." The "To the Reader" note tells us the author, a mother, was "late" by September 1849.
