Presentation copy: "Mrs. Alfred Hunt with the writer's kind regards. April 1875." Sent the month of publication. The recipient, the wife of the well known artist, mother of Violet Hunt, and herself a writer, was one of Blackmore's closest friends. He kept up a prolific correspondence with her for many years. Inserted is an interesting 3 page letter from the author to his publisher dealing with this book, its serial publication (in Blackwood's Magazine), possible date for book publication, etc. Blackmore considered this novel his best work, rating it much higher than Lorna Doone. Very fine copy.
