Splendid preliminary drawings for this famous book. These are superior, in my opinion, to the pen-and-inks as published in Harper's Magazine. 1.) "The 'Rosamunde' of Schubert", showing Svengali at the piano, 6 1/2" by 5". 2.) Trilby seated on a model's couch. In the published version this drawing is incorporated with No. 1. Here she is wearing shoes, but there are two details of bare feet, as it was finally published, 7 3/4" by 5 1/4". 3.) "Hast thou found me, O mine enemy", showing Svengali leaning out of a theatre box, 4 1/2" by 4 1/2". 4.) "Ouvre-moi ta porte pour l'amour de Dieu!", showing a clown, with a detail of one of his hands, 7 1/4" by 4 1/2". While the backgrounds are sketchy, the figures are finished drawings. They vary somewhat from the published versions.
