Edited by Geoffrey Keynes and Brian Hill. Portraits. Eliza Savage was the prototype of Alethea Pontifex in "The Way of All Flesh". Her great love for Butler was not returned--indeed, frightened him to death--and he wrote of her: "And here, alas! at any rate for me / She was an all too, too impossible she."--a rather unkind parody of Crashaw.
