With seal. Highly interesting letter, written to his most intimate friend with whom he travelled for two years on the Continent. ". . . I send you on the opposite leaf two more hymns which run to music of my sister's setting exceedingly well, though whether they will answer for a church is a different matter." He speaks of a book he is writing entitled "Scythia" and goes on at length about France and the Napoleonic Wars. The hymns (actually there are three) he encloses for Thornton's perusal are (1) For the 15th Sunday after Trinity, "Lo the lilies of the field. . ." (2) Ascension Day, "Sit thou on my right hand my son! saith the Lord. . ." (3) 22nd Sunday after Trinity, "The sound of war through earth and air. . ." (see illustration)
