Originally published in the Contemporary Review under the pseudonym of "Robert Maitland," this attack on the Pre-Raphaelites, especially on D.G. Rossetti, began a violent and bitter controversy. Judging by today's standards of morality in literature it seems a bit strong to accuse Rossetti of "wheeling his nuptial couch out into the public streets." Neverless this is a literary document of considerable importance. It is very scarce and in the remarkably fine condition of this copy a rarity.
