Rigidly suppressed. These letters, purporting to be by Shelley, were a fabrication of the infamous "Major" Byron who styled himself an illegitimate son of Lord Byron. Moxon, the publisher, was completely taken in by the forgery and Browning never saw the originals. When the letters were exposed Moxon immediately recalled all copies. The book has real value, for Browning, fortunately, paid little attention to the letters, contenting himself in his long, 44-page introduction with a brilliant critique of Shelley's poetry.
