44 original paintings for this work, comprising 17 full page illustrations in many colors, 25 leaves of text written in black and red against solid gold backgrounds, all surrounded by elaborate colored borders of various designs, plus tivo title pages, 11 1/2" by 9 1/2". A splendid example of original Victorian art. The book for which these originals were made was published by Day & Son in 1865. It is one of the finest examples of chromolithography of the period. From six to thirteen colors were employed on a single page. McLean (Victorian Book Design, pages 94-5) says of it: "Here is a new concept of the Book Beautiful which prefigures the Kelmscott opening of thirty years later."
