A collection of over 1,750 printer's proofs of binding covers for "yellow back" publications of the '802 and '90s. Together with a similar collection of nearly 300 covers used as salesmen's samples. In all over 2,000 items. An extraordinary and wonderful collection. The only duplications occur when the covers have not been satisfactory as to lettering, color or design, and both 'before' and 'after' proofs are included. This makes the collection doubly interesting for we can thus see how the art editors worked with the engravers. Many publishers are represented--Cassell, Chatto & Windus, Routledge, Ward Lock, Frederick Warne, Tinsley, Sampson Low, Simpkin--and many others whose names are forgotten today. The two volumes of salesmen's samples are all for The Select Library of Fiction, published by Chapman& Hall. Sadleir makes no mention of this series. Many of the authors whose works were
