Examines sources concerning early career of Joseph Smith and his family in the area of Western New York. The material gathered by Philastus Hurlbut, published in 1834 by E.D. Howe in MORMONISM UNVEILED [sic] is contrasted with the writings of Joseph Smith and his mother, Lucy. The Smiths' writings in every case where vital or legal records permit a contrast are basically more accurate than Howe's work. Based on primary and secondary sources.
