24 April 1975 to 8 June 1975. As cities fall to the Viet Cong during the Ho Chi Ming campaign, Doan's family are counseled to leave Saigon by the mission president. She hears bombs and rockets as the Viet Cong begin to conquer the city. Doan and her family are eventually evacuated, thanks to the influence of her father, a Colonel in the Vietnamese Army. They transfer to an overcrowded freighter and Doan is devastated to hear that Saigon has fallen. In Guam she meets the missionaries who had baptized her, and stays at Anderson Airforce Base before being moved to Camp Pendleton, California.
