"There must be an opposition in all things, says 2nd Nephi, and a discussion of the changing image of Mormonism since 1830 helps to demonstrate that principle. On the one hand, the Church sought to establish a favorable image through missionary work and the preparation and distribution of tracts and other literature. On the other hand, those opposed to the Church, its doctrines and practices, also prepared and distributed tracts, pamphlets, and other literature conveying an unfavorable image. Thus, a literary history of Mormonism is largely a story of creative plot and counterplot. This talks about those various public images throughout the first 135 years of the Church."
