Both Mexicans and Americans have disputed the importance of General Pancho Villa's attack on the border town of Columbus, New Mexico, during the early hours of 9 March 1916. It has never been revealed why Villa attacked the small town. Villa's antipathy to the United States was chiefly the result of the Mormons then living in Mexico. Recently, manuscripts were found which resolve the longstanding questions facing historians of the Mexican Revolution, but the definitive history of the Columbus raid has yet to be written.
