In 1841, John D. Lee and Alfonso Young participated in a debate in Tennessee with two representatives of the Churches of Christ. Some of the fundamental differences and similarities between the two restorationist traditions are discussed. He notes that over the course of time, Enlightenment optimism in the Churches of Christ "finally triumphed over apocalyptic pessimism and thereby paved the way for full-scale modernization." He senses that a similar pattern prevailed with the LDS Church. Although Joseph Smith searched for a church that was objectively true, objectivity for him and his followers was not a matter of rational precision, but it rather "a matter of the immediate power of God." That was the critical difference between Mormons and Churches of Christ in the 19th century.
