From 1870-71, General Regis de Trobriand served as the post commander at Camp Douglas. A Frenchman, he was the highest ranking foreign-born U.S. officer who had not been a soldier prior to the Civil War. He was also one of only two Frenchmen to attain the rank of major general in the U.S. Army, the other being the celebrated Lafayette in the Revolutionary War. Despite these honors, de Trobriand's tenure at Camp Douglas was short. He was removed from command of Camp Douglas by appearing to ingratiate himself with Brigham Young and the Mormons. One of his acts that incurred the anger of politicians revolved around the arrest of Brigham Young in September 1871 on a charge of cohabitation with his polygamous wives. Politicians wanted de Trobriand's assistance in their efforts to subdue the Mormons, but the Frenchman would not cooperate.
