Delta Phi, Utah's first fraternity, functioned in its early years principally as a debating society on the campus of the University of Deseret (it became the University of Utah in 1892). It was the most active student organization on campus in the nineteenth century. It helped train many students in speaking, debating, and thinking and it counted many community and LDS Church leaders in its membership. It was dormant from 1905 to 1920, thereafter developing into a fraternity for returned LDS missionaries.
